Beaches in Villefranche

Villefranche-sur-Mer may be a small village, but when it comes to beaches, it delivers big time. From family-friendly sandy stretches to hidden rocky coves, there’s something for every mood — whether you’re sunbathing, swimming, or just looking for that perfect Riviera moment.

Here’s a local’s guide to the best beaches in and around Villefranche.

🏖️ Plage des Marinières

The main beach — long, sandy, and iconic.

  • Ideal for families and swimmers
  • Easily accessible from the train station and Old Town
  • Public showers (closed during heatwaves), snack kiosks
  • Transparent water, soft sand + pebbles
  • Gets busier in peak summer months
  • Great at sunset
  • Offers a private beach option : “Marinières Plage” book ahead, opens from 04 June to 30th September

Local tip : stay west side if you want sand & peebles but walk toward the far east end for quieter spots and shade.

🪨 Plage de la Darse

Hidden, rocky, and quieter — for those who want to feel like a local.

  • Located near the old port and the Citadel
  • Mostly pebbles and rocks — bring water shoes
  • Crystal-clear water, perfect for snorkeling
  • Not much shade or services — pack a bag
  • Ideal for quiet swims or reading away from the crowds

Local tip : great spot for photos with the Citadel in the background. Have lunch at the Baleine Joyeuse if you can, it’s yummy and the cheapest option around.

🐾 Plage de l’Ange Gardien

A peaceful beach just on the edge of Villefranche, and the only one where dogs are welcome!

  • Located just west of Plage des Marinières, past the small marina
  • Mostly large pebbles and rocky shoreline
  • Great views of Villefranche’s bay
  • Dog-friendly year-round
  • Quiet, laid-back atmosphere — often used by locals

Local tip : as a dog friendly beach it is not always clean and it is the least comfortable beach. Come early and don’t forget your pooh bag!

🌊 Tiny Local Coves & Rocky Spots

Not official beaches, but perfect for an impromptu dip. Found along the coastal path to Cap Ferrat towards the east and along the coastal path to Nice towards the west.

  • Just rocks and steps into the sea
  • Great for snorkelling
  • Ideal for a quiet morning swim or reading break
  • Admire the wealthy properties of Saint Jean on the way

Local tip : bring a mat a go early, they fill up quickly.
